Irish Geolinguistics and GIS
Geolinguistics aims to combine geographic and language data to provide researchers with a better picture of the social and cultural status of a language. This project focuses on the contact situation between the English and Irish languages in the nineteenth century, with the goal of producing better maps portraying the history of this contact. Furthermore, the history (and limitations) of geolinguistics both inside and outside of Ireland will be addressed as this work unfolds. Learn more and follow the progress of this project here.
Irish Censuses and the Irish Language
Census data provides researchers with a detailed look at cultural and social attributes such as education levels, household structure, health, and aging. Data collection on languages spoken has also been a feature of censuses since at least the nineteenth century. This project focuses on the history of such endeavors and its implementation in Ireland in particular, one of the earliest nations to measure language alongside basic population characteristics.
